Viva Tequila
Did you know that the most frequently ordered cocktail in America is the margarita? It is according to David Karraker, spokesman for Allied Domecq’s Sausa Tequila, citing studies by Research International. Revenue from U.S. tequila sales last year rose by 11% to $1.06 billion, according to figures from the Distilled Spirits Council. More tellingly, while overall sales by volume were up by 20.6% for the last two years, sales of high-end premium brands have grown by a whopping 51% in the same period.
This last figure is telling as it means that the whole profile of tequila in America is changing as it evolves from the cheap firewater that fueled countless frat parties to a serious, $100-per-bottle connoisseurs drink worthy of a place on the back bar besides the best single-malt Scotches and cognacs.
